Program Overview

Give an Hour has partnered with Healthy Minds Fairfax (HMF), Fairfax County and the Cities of Fairfax and Falls Church, Virginia to provide free and confidential mental health services to income eligible youth and children between the ages of 5 and 21. Steps and Tips to Get Care

NOTE: Give an Hour Healthy Minds Fairfax services are for income-eligible children and youth who are residents of Fairfax County and the Cities of Fairfax and Falls Church, Virginia.

  • To receive FREE and confidential counseling, with no charges or insurance billed by a Give an Hour provider.
  • To talk with a licensed mental health provider about your concerns.
  • To be able to talk in a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental environment.
  • To be referred to additional mental health services and resources if needed.
Choose from a variety of options including in-person, telephone support, or video counseling. While it’s common in the mental health community to meet in the provider’s office, it may not be feasible for everyone. If you are unable to meet with a provider in-person, we encourage the use of telephone support or video counseling. A provider will need to rely on his or her professional judgment to determine when an alternate method of contact will sufficiently meet your needs.

NOTE: If you do not feel comfortable with phone support or video counseling, please contact us at fairfaxcounty@giveanhour.org for assistance.

Tips on Contacting a Provider:

  • Mention Give an Hour: Speak with prospective providers on the phone prior to your first appointment—tell them you are a Give an Hour Healthy Minds Fairfax client.
  • Ask Questions: Ask how much experience they have working in the areas with which you need help.
  • Prioritize Comfort: Your relationship with a provider is an important factor in the success of counseling.
  • Contact Multiple Providers: Often people contact several providers before finding one who is a good match for their needs, please contact fairfaxcounty@giveanhour.org if you need additional assistance.
  • Remember: A provider need not have experienced what you have been through to be helpful but needs to convey an initial understanding of how your experience is affecting your life

If you are here to receive services, you can help Give an Hour better serve their clients by agreeing to anonymously answer a few additional demographic questions.

Optional Survey

We must change our culture if we are to succeed in saving lives and ending suffering. We must come to accept that mental health and mental illness are elements of the human condition – just as physical health is.
