A Day to Change Direction

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is sponsoring a Day of Service with Give an Hour at VFW posts across the nation to promote open conversations about mental health. These service projects which will draw together VFW members and community members and will include wellness conversations, beautification projects, athletic events and much more. Each event is designed to educate people about the Five Signs of Emotional Suffering.

Into the Light Film Screening

In this film – which begins airing on PBS in January – Emmy Award winning documentary filmmaker Charles Stuart weaves together the personal journey of  Marine Sgt. Brendan O’Toole who returns from Afghanistan looking to raise awareness about the mental health issues that affect those who serve with the story of Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, a psychologist who confronts the impact of mental illness on her family.  The film is a powerful reminder of how sharing our stories can help break down barriers and lead to emotional healing and recovery.

The Embassy of Canada will host an engaging evening featuring a reception and “fireside chat” with Dr. David Shulkin, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Give an Hour Founder and President, Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen will interview Secretary Shulkin about becoming the 9th Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, his perspective on the mental health challenges that our veterans and their families sometimes face and his vision for the future of the VA.

Corporate Acceleration Alliance Meeting

Give an Hour in partnership with Booz Allen Hamilton, a Founding Member of the Campaign to Change Direction, is holding the inaugural meeting of the Corporate Acceleration Alliance for Emotional Well-being. This gathering will bring together representatives from key U.S. industries who share a common goal—addressing the emotional well-being challenges of their workforce and driving industry-wide transformation. Alliance participants will share best practices, identify barriers to progress and discuss next steps to address this issue in the workplace.
